This girl. This persistent little outside-loving force bugged me for a week to take her to the local chicken house after we discovered it, so she could hold some chicks. She wants five chickens, as well as "lawts and lawts of rabbits". She yearns to garden and farm, and it's all been there since she was tiny- except then, they were "wabbits" and "hickens". Is there a gene for this desire?
I can see that a second-story flat isn't going to be enough room at this rate. In a thriving backyard-chicken and bee town, nearly anything fowl or buzzing is possible. Plants, and making medicine, are her other two favorite pastimes. She collects herbs and leaves on her walks and grinds them up, leaving them on the deck to dry. It's a game to walk the neighborhood and spot yarrow growing in the unmown yards and rosehips in parking lots. She said yesterday in an exasperated tone, "Mama. I will ALWAYS BE ON FIRE." I have no doubt at all about that.
She scored a wooden mortar and pestle at a local thrift shop, we're currently reading I'm a Medicine Woman, Too! by Jesse Wolf Hardin and popping into this local joint regularly...
Urban Farm Store on Belmont Ave., Portland where the baby chicks, lay mash, and friendly servicefolk are plentiful.
I can predict that A Chicken in Every Yard, will make the bedside table soon enough. Passionate little bedtime readers will be thrilled.

Athena Perrakis of Sage Goddess, and I, are overjoyed to invite you to sit in our panel audience tonight for our debut of SACRED GRIT TV as we chat about the things we've learned, and knocks we take daily, as we engineer our lives, relationships, children and businesses. These chats are deliciously unfiltered, unscripted, and from the hip, meaning not necessarily kid stuff. There will likely be language, just so you know.
Our reason for creating Sacred Grit together was to experiment with the format of live conversation that is born of what we see and hear in our community groups: SouLodge and Magical Sabbatical.
Be sure to update your Flash Player, turn up your volume, and consider using Chrome instead of Firefox or Safari to view. It may help you get a smooth transmission. We can't wait to see you over at Spreecast and have some fun Athena and Pixie style! You do not need to create an account to watch-but it's a quick process and your name and photo looks sweeter than a blank thumbnail called "guest". :)
All episodes will be recorded and you can view them later at our channel at Spreecast.
Sacred Grit is Community Supported TV, conceived and birthed to serve. ♥

Aravaipa Canyon is a rustic, warm stateside retreat located on a 55-acre horse and cattle ranch south of Tuscon, AZ. With typical dry, high temps close to 70 degrees in November, it's a pre-Winter respite amidst dramatic red rock canyon walls where Bighorn Sheep and over 200 species of birds call home.
Read more about it and register HERE.
For some of us, committing to quiet creativity during the deep Fall and Winter months is necessary-beginning that process nestled into the canyon bowl sets the tone for the season of drawing inward.
Being tucked into the heart of cooler country now must be juxtaposed with the fragrant Fall sagebrush, red rock, and coyotes of the desert, no?
That's what I was thinking.
Let's PAINT!
Can't make a live gathering this year? Join me online for the virtual version of Visual Quest! Spirited creativity from the deep well of you awaits.

I left Big Sur last Friday, after a week of Visual Questing with 20 AMAZING women. We covered more sacred territory in five days than I typically do in a month! We were blessed to attend a sacred Inipi Ceremony, hosted by two men who are so dedicated to being in service to The Great Mystery that all of us were blown away, as well as rebirthed on the Beltane-day of holy fires in honor of the season of fertility and impending harvest.
The sweat lodge itself is something I have never done with a large group of newbies before. There were a lot of questions and a few anxieties. The sweat was optional and I mistakenly assumed not everyone would go in. Wednesday at Esalen, for VQ and Matrilumina is traditionally Exquisite Self Care day, so we spent it eating light, dosing with tinctures, having bodywork done, lying in the sun, drinking 100 oz of water with medicinal flowers floating in them, napping, climbing the river trail and honoring silence.
It was hot. Even for me. But the sisters hung in there and processed through the heat, releasing and sending the energy into the Earth like seasoned ceremonial lodgers. I was feeling keenly motherly about each of them, monitoring them even in the darkness, listening for each sister and asking them to voice their needs. So much wisdom was shared inside that womb, and much shedding of superficial discomforts took place as well.
The thing about shamanism is that it's the most ancient spiritual practice in the world. So when you're *looking for a way in*- to reconcile what's in disharmony, to tap your intuitive wisdom, to get a look at your own insides, to heal relentless issues of the past, to engage your creativity, to source yourself and your inifinite guides for answers, to bring about big shifts and revelations- there's no more colorful and mystical path than taking a shamanic journey and creating ceremony.
Sixty hours after arriving home from leading my first solo five-day workshop, we made our way to Portland. We took two days to get here, but could have taken a week considering the fair amount of complaining coming from the back seats. What a lengthy adventure for lil bits!
The Cascades breathe so deeply, I could feel their wet kisses on my cheeks greeting me as I drove hundreds of miles North...
The PacNW feels like the lungs of North America, not unlike the rainforests of South America. Maybe it's the diaphragm? Having this thought reminded me of the grief that settles into the lungs, my own lungs, and the work I did around them when I got whooping cough in 2010. Coughing for two months straight caused me to look back into the history of my family, into the generations of folks intent on surviving and doing a damn good job of just that. But the grief. It's thick. Back in the Central Valley, there is so. much. dust. The Dust Bowl that blew my ancestors West still blows, and the results were all over our porches when we left town on Monday. I realize that in order to do what I am here to do, I have to step away from what I've so far called home. I was never meant to continue suffering the sorrows of those who came before me. I don't believe any of us are. I see that it's brave to make a new road for myself and my family. I also see how I resisted it for so long, going and returning, answering the call and, finally, knowing when to hang up.
I'm not yet certain that Portland is where I'll make a forever home, (my word for the year, and a nice way she did manifest, eh?), or if I even want a forever home. Home will always be wherever I lay my head: the Earth, and with my little people. Until they begin to make their own roads, that is.

Miles, seventeen months, 2007.
Seven years ago we designed and built this beautiful house. We knew that we'd take flight when the babes were older, but that it would keep us snug for a time...cool in the Summer...warm in the Winter. Tomorrow morning we leave for Portland's festival community, street circuses, food carts, famous First Fridays, Last Thursdays, Saturday Markets, and VooDoo Donuts. Oh! And Trackers Earth.
It's going to be a culture shock after living in the conservative belt of California, or Baklahoma, as we've come to know it. I'm looking forward to sweating with a new community of spirited medicine people, holding monthly women's circles, rooming with fantastic studio mates in the Pearl, getting to know Seattle's gorgeous little nooks and crannies, supporting local business, and of course, rebuking plastic.
Circus Artemis, All Women Circus
I'm so grateful to this little dwelling and to my parents who have availed themselves to us and their grandkids so fully and completely, and to the healing work that was done here between them and I. It was because of a need to reconcile many daughterly issues that I was called to live here, two doors down from them. It hasn't been easy, healing the past, and sometimes it's been really unpleasant, actually. But to have stared down the dragons and learn what love can do has made every uncomfortable moment worthwhile. To see my kids forge a strong bond with their Nana and Pawpaw, and to see my mom and dad work so hard to rewire what came factory installed for them has been to witness a miracle.
It is a blessed life in which we can explore our creative curiosities and feel so supported by the Universe. An adventuresome bunch of unlearners such as us must follow the sweet wind to see what we can see.

In working strictly with women for the past two years, I have become so enamoured with how we move about the world. When we're in flow with our daily lives and snugged into our roles, we radiate harmoniously. When something happens that clogs that flow, our radiance becomes diminished and fear and worry take over. We internalize our stresses and little hair triggers pile up, causing overwhelm. Often our lapse in trust of abundance, our default to working for pay that is way out of alignment with our integrity, and our lack of faith in women's creative economy, are at the root of the clogs. Women are powerful forces, creatresses by birthright, and much re-membering is beginning to take place.
Healing historically male-dominated beliefs about our bodies, our capabilities, and our sacred ways is happening from the inside out today. I was recently asked to talk about money by some of my SouLodge sisters, and it's one of the trickiest topics on the table. (That and sex). Because SouLodge is a journey in Earth Medicine, I felt I wanted to create a new conversation that was not invasive to the deep inner soulwork taking place in Lodge. The metaphor of a river came to me...an outward expression of divine flow which contributes to the Whole. As the work of SouLodge and all those on a healing path expands, many women are ready to embody radiance out in the world and reconcile the clogs once and for all. Woman Is a River was born.
We're blessed to live in a time where we don't have to project our centuries-old discomfort with patriarchal status-quos onto actual men, don't you think? Many of the fellows want to work with us, and honor our differences. Let's unravel our questions together in women's community, and begin to flow forward, sustainably, in the way that works for us. Because we don't actually have to keep trying to live in a way that isn't in harmony with how we operate. We're designed for FLOW, are we not?

Holy Much-Needed Check In, wildones!
Dust off a cushion and let's chew the fat a minute. First off, I'm sorry about abandoning this space! This sweet and comfy space, which is soon to be located in an all new cozy space online, which I hope you will find even more delightful.
I'm thinking about our hearts after weeks of exploring and healing sacral chakras and sex with the help of Rabbit-- it is the heart which is calling for attention next. Stay tuned on May 1st, the holy day of Beltane fires, for the new SouLodge guide who is fluttering on deck and very excited to meet you. My teacher used to say, "If we can heal our hearts, we can heal the world." I believe her. SouLodge remains a sanctuary for women to gather and heal in. The community grows more unbelievable each week. Pinch me.
Just in case you missed the social media memo, I want to share an interview with you that I did with the enchantress, Joanna Devoe, for her KiCKASS WiTCH series, Every Witch Way. It was a fun and lively conversation about SouLodge and my "unusual life". Ha!
In big news, Athena Perrakis, of Sage Goddess, and I have just launched an uncensored live broadcast TV show called Sacred Grit. We say uncensored, because we plan to misbehave just enough to keep it real. We wanted a place to freely chat about what it's REALLY LIKE. You know, the nitty gritty stuff of life. We looked around and didn't see it, so we created it ourselves. Join us on May 14th at 6pm PST for our first "episode"- more details and links to the "station" to come!
Meanwhile, it's been a rubberband world here at home, packing to move to Portland. We heard that our flat would not be ready until June 1, a month later than originally agreed. I leisurely sat back, managing my stress like a pro and pacing myself accordingly, prepping for the upcoming Shamanic Painting as a Process week in Big Sur with 18 amazing women, and then, of course, smack! News rolled in today that our space will, in fact, be available May 1!
So, high-tailing it I am given that I now have exactly two weeks to relocate and a week of that will be spend in beautiful Big Sur!!
I hope that you are all well, and GROUNDED (could you ground a little extra for me, too?) and embracing the opportunities for growth in the divine direction that only Spring can inspire...
What fluffy, pollen-y, golden nuggets are turning up for you?
